This entry is pretty much just for boyzici, so apologies for that! someone needs to give him his poker fix...
feel free to read it, but you may not care!
I came third at the Clyde on sunday; this is of course in itself unremarkable, but my out-hand was particularly spectacular:
With 3 of us left, I had 66 in the big blind and raised to 9k (with 21k back). Shane went all in (for 33k) and i called (all-in).
He turned over AJ off, making me a slight favourite to win the hand (but at this point, it's basically a coin-toss).
The first card out was A, giving him top pair and making me around a 4:1 dog. The next card was a 2, no help to either of us.
The third card of the flop was a 6, giving me trips and making me something like 98% favourite to win the hand (at this point Shane needs running cards, otherwise i'd make a full house over his set).
The turn is a J, giving Shane 2 pairs, still inferior to my set; i'm now only around a 90% favourite.
The river, inevitably, is another J, giving us both full houses, but my 6's full inferior to his J's full.
All in all, a bit of a rollercoaster! I'm very glad to say that Shane went on to win a few hands later (when we had gotten down to 3 players, it was RAF Ben, myself and Shane, and Shane had only 3k chips, i had about 10k).
I've started to play the occasional free-roll online, and my first two games i've placed in the top 15 (out of a starting field of 130ish each time) which is ok. Last night, i got my money in good with aces, which were summarily cracked by the big stack with KT off making a flush, which was annoying!

I often read the local news, just to see if anything interesting is happening in the area. The following phrase from this article left me slightly bemused:
"Shaun Godfrey, 26, was ambushed as he walked home from a pub in Hartcliffe and shot with a gun hidden in bushes for community use, the court heard."
so was it the gun or the bushes that are for community use? because if it's the gun, i think i can suggest a way to stop these things happening. on the other hand, exactly what would the community use bushes for? hiding guns presumably... again, i'm spotting a problem...

Due to a minor miscalculation on eBay, i have come into possession of a large box of computer cables. And i really do mean *large*. There's a whole load of serial and SCSI control cables, which are unlikely to be of much use to anyone, hence will go back on eBay.
However, i've also got 30 network cables of various lengths (between about 1 and 10 metres) and a load of power cables (the 3-pin kettle type for computers and so on).
If you have need of any of the above before i start flogging what i don't want, please let me know! i only needed a couple of network cables...
And the cost i paid for this bounteous treasure you ask? £3.70....
----------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: -->
i've sold most of the SCSI and server cables and have made £47 thus far. w00t!!

On one bright but cold February day, Beware! For the Christians come out to play...
They woo you with talk of a lavish, free lunch, But don't let them trick you, for here comes the crunch:
In exchange for this food you must hear of their god, (From reading the Bible, a murderous sod)
Their indoctrination will give you the chills, My advice: take the food and then run for the hills...

Because i'm such a nice guy, i'm going to save you the trouble of thinking for yourselves and just go ahead and tell you the 3 reasons why you should watch this video.
1) Big band jazz is pretty much the only sort worth listening too, and this is one of the best pieces of music. 2) These guys put most professional ensembles to shame, and they're a fucking HIGH SCHOOL BAND!! 3) The leader kinda dances and conducts, which is fun.
so go, enjoy, be impressed.
peace out

As a lot of you will know, i do a lot of buying and selling of stuff on eBay. In the most it's proved really enjoyable and handy. However, selling in particular has introduced me to some very strange/corrupt individuals.
This morning, i received what must be hands down the most fucked-up message i've ever had on the site. Beearing in mind, this was completely unprovoked by anything more than regular "please pay now" emails from me:
Re: eBAY Item/s: 2201921**** 1 Thank you for posting. Please accept my apologies for not replying to you sooner. . Below I have pasted text which I wrote that I copy to all my friends and contacts. Aubrey de Grey and the Methuselah Foundation have been the subject of a big Channel 4 documentary and article by main news sources (Economist etc). Many people who meet do not know about these. De Grey is a scientist from the University of Cambridge. His concern and the concern of a growing number of like-minded academics is that the explosive expansion of molecular biology and the related disciplines now make it quite foreseeable humanity shall conquer the issue of ageing and decline into death and frailty. With increasing competence in our ability as spexies to regenerate ageing caused damage -if these abilities keep ahead of our need them then it will spell the end of ageing and attendant death. With tide of opinion growing as a function of awareness the prospect of our generation being capable (given public momentum) of attaining radical life extension rises. Quite possibly you and I. This not a joke or a hoax. This is both serious and important. Please examine the case for human age reversal reasearch. YOUR DEATH. The Race Is On. There is need to: -Warn the public -Secure funds -Recruit volunteers - www.mfoundation.org View video interview footage with Aubrey De Grey from University of Cambridge. Search results from Google Video Search: http://video.google.co.uk/videosearch?q=%22aubrey+de+grey%22 If you are concerned about clicking on those links sent from me in Mail then please Google this subject direct to see SENS and De Grey. (Google Video for interview footage) I hope that what you see and hear will be of interest. I have included as attachment broadcast review by TimeOut. PDF. THANK YOU.
errrm. ok. do i reply? do i run screaming for the hills? the bit i find concerning is that they want to "recruit volunteers". for what precisely?

According to this story on the BBC news website, Scrabble means "to grope frantically."
waheyyyyyyyy!
anyway, childishness aside...
last night was film night at Lord boyzici's. He cooked up an incredible feast of roast pork with crackling (which was so good we polished it all off!). This was followed by a home-made cheesecake so sumptuous i wanted to take it to a hotel room and spend the night with it.
the film was Ya lyublyu tebya (You I Love), supposedly the first gay film to come out of Russia. The story was ok, and does a good job of showing what a depressing arsehole Russia is, but this was mitigated by the two protagonists being seriously fucking hot excellent actors.
this is all for now.

there's a lot of building work going on in my department at the moment to give us a new NMR facility. As i was coming up the stairs from the lab, two builders were walking past, conversing, one at each end of a large sheet of chip-board. The one at the front was HOT AS, and as they walked past me he said "i'd do anything for a tenner, me."
oh god the temptation!!!!!

working in science, it's very rare to find something that's truly laugh-out-loud funny. this is one of those things. totally genuine journal article, published by the RSC. see if you notice anything unusual in their choice of abbreviation...
( Picture behind the cut... )
PS - thanks a million to Lord boyzici for the hosting. for he, ladies and gentles, is a god among men.

Going FREE if anyone wants it:
Working P166 MMX box:
Intel mobo, Pentium 166 MMX proc 32 MB RAM on-board graphics, usb, sound in a decent case with a rock-solid PSU (will need re-routing of the f-panel, i can do this if you want for 1 x beer) optical drive if you need it
if anyone wants it, gimme a shout. i just powered it up and it's working fine - would make a decent linux box, file server or play machine.
i've got a shedload of components not doing a lot at the moment, and cables too, so if you're short of anything, let me know as i'm planning a major clear out!
*********************EDIT*************************************
I've routed the F-panel now so it can be turned on with the power switch (rather than by shorting two pins with a screwdriver...)
Still no takers? i'd hate to have to boot the old girl... she's very reliable, and passively cooled, so silent (until you add a HDD) and very low power usage!

i think it's important that one's musical taste should be unashamed. just because i wear all black doesn't mean i only like rock and metal. oh no, if i like a lesbian power-group then i should feel free to say so.
and if i see a girl singing an acoustic song on youtube which makes me cum in my pants, then i should say that too.
if you don't know who Terra Naomi is yet, you probably should. So go listen, and then change your underwear.
peace out xx

Sorry for the delay in updating, been a busy week for me.... you remember that machine i inherited? well, the computer that came with it was terminally b0rken, so it fell upon my eagerness to build it a new one. i attained a free PC from computing here which still had a couple of ISA slots (needed for the Analogue-Digital converter card and the 5.25" floppy drive control card).
so i built that. and then the problems began. unbelievably, i found drivers online for the A/D card (it's 20 years old!). however, they only work in DOS or Win 3.1... the software on the other hand, only works in windows 2000 or XP as the company long since stopped supporting it.
so in i go, armed with DOS disks and 7 floppies of windows 3.1... oh good god it was fun! and unbelievably, i got it working. now the only problem i have is that the DAT files it outputs are unreadable. by anything it seems...
on we go!

How many more bands are going to reform this year? do they not realise that what they had was something they probably should have left alone? these reformations always lack (at least some) original members.
thirty years on, are things gonna be the same? the music scene is so different now. all they're going to do is please a few naff old idiots who haven't moved on in their lives, and in the process, destroy their own former greatness.
led zeppelin? try led zimmer frame. and now the sex pistols. as if they didn't learn from '96... for frank's sake, johnny rotten's not an angry kid any more... he's fucking 51. i mean really, what the hell?
smashing pumpkins without james iha? what's the point? it's not the same band, so why pretend it is?
gah. this rant was brought to you by the letters R I and P...

So, what fun stuffs have been happening lately? well, it's still pretty hectic at home, but getting a heck of a lot better - there are now such luxuries as floors, ceilings and even some lighting! There should be something resembling a kitchen within a couple of weeks, all being well.
At work, i've inherited a new toy. Well, new in the sense that it's new to me - it's actually about 30 years old. So i'm having fun repairing and recomissioning that... other than that, things are carrying on pretty much as usual...
I have tickets to see Inme at the academy next tuesday which should be fun.

At home, the house is being remodeled. It started about a fortnight ago, the general premise being that a 1 room extension is being built on the back, to house a grand piano, the current kitchen has been removed and will be a dining room, and the old spare bedroom will be the new kitchen.
Although work is progressing very rapidly, we've been without any form of kitchen for 2 weeks (or living room for that matter) and probably will be for the forseeable future. If i'm honest, it's starting to get me down. I'm spending longer at work to avoid going home, cos the place is such a depressing bomb site, and i'm basically trapped in my room (which is in turn jammed full of stuff)... And, because there's now nothing below the floorboards of my room, i can hear (and see) everything that goes on below (and vice versa) so i feel like i have no privacy and get woken up by the first noise in the morning...
Yesterday evening, however, was a delightful distraction. Film night at boyzici's. He provided an excellent meal, with a continental-style meats and olives starter, followed by superb cottage pie, chocolate torte and cheeses. Most scrumptious indeed, and followed by a Korean film, Oldboy. It was a fantastic pschological drama, almost Faustian in it's tortuousness.
